How The Quail's Journey Began
Hello there!
Thank you so much for subscribing to Quail Mail, the official newsletter of Common Quails.
Through this newsletter, I want to share the story of how Common Quails began. Before moving to Portland, OR, I had the opportunity to live on a farm for about a year. The farm was full of animals, including quails.
This was the farm house I lived in, surrounded by tall pine trees with the orange colored roof. ‘Farm House’, 2022
We had Coturnix and California quails on the farm, but the Coturnix quails stood out to me, for not standing out and being so common! They didn’t have those fancy topknots like the California ones—just round little bodies covered in simple brown feathers. But they were so cute! And their sounds were so funny that my partner and I would mimic them all the time. We would always say, "Bak Bak Ba" to imitate their calls. During that year on the farm, I got really attached to the quails.
When we left the farm and moved to Portland, I had to say goodbye to them. But those memories stayed with me, and one day, I realized I wanted to create a comic starring quails. It felt like a new challenge I was excited to take on.
Common Quails was about to hatch on Oct 2nd, 2023.
I started Common Quails with the very first post of a quail egg. Initially, I only shared it on Instagram, but a few months ago, I discovered Webtoons and began posting there as well.
Some of early works of Common Quails. No background, just blobbing quails.
When I first started Common Quails, I didn’t have any solid plans, so it’s changed a bit since the early days. I had no idea where this project would go, but I was having fun with it. English is my second language, so I wasn’t always confident writing in English, but I figured—hey, it’s just a small comic about quails. Who cares if the quails aren’t speaking perfect English, right? That mindset helped me keep going, without feeling too much pressure.
And now Common Quails is turning one year old! October 2nd is a big day for me. I’m looking forward to creating more comics and seeing where this journey takes me. Besides comics, I’m also planning to do more painting, something I’ve been wanting to get back into. So, the next newsletter might be all about that.
Until the next Quail Mail, take care and talk to you soon!
